Diesel prices rise as US and Europe fuel supplies tighten

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Diesel prices remained elevated on Wednesday as tighter refined-product supplies kept pressure on fuel markets in the United States and Europe. U.S. ultra-low sulfur diesel futures jumped 7.4% on Monday to settle at $4.19 a gallon. That marked the contract’s biggest daily gain since July 13. Early Wednesday trading put the contract near $4.28 a gallon, while European diesel refining margins remained at historically high levels after rising nearly 10% on Monday.

Diesel prices remain elevated as tight US and European fuel supplies pressure markets.

U.S. retail diesel averaged $5.257 a gallon on August 10, compared with $5.348 a week earlier. Prices remained well above the $4.578 average recorded on July 6. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that distillate inventories fell 3.5 million barrels during the week ended July 31. Stocks reached 107.2 million barrels, compared with 110.6 million a week earlier. The total was 5.1% below a year earlier and 16.1% below the comparable level two years ago.

Europe has also faced unusually high costs for converting crude oil into diesel. The premium for European low-sulfur gasoil over crude reached a record $74.66 a barrel on July 30. European diesel margins then climbed almost 10% on August 10. The European Central Bank reported diesel pump prices around €1.98 per litre in the third week of July. Its analysis showed refining margins contributed about €0.35 per litre during the first three weeks of July, up sharply from earlier levels.

Refinery disruptions reduce available diesel supply

Refinery interruptions have removed additional fuel production from an already constrained international market. An attack struck a refinery in Russia’s Tatarstan region, adding to reduced Russian refining activity. Saudi Arabia’s Jazan refinery has also remained offline since July 27 following an earlier attack. The disruptions affect regions that normally supply significant volumes of refined petroleum products to international buyers. Global refinery runs had already fallen substantially below year-earlier levels during June as several major refining centers operated with reduced throughput.

Russia has also restricted the amount of diesel available for international trade. The country extended restrictions on gasoline and diesel exports through January 31, 2027. Middle East product shipments have faced additional disruption from sharply reduced vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic through the waterway has fallen far below levels recorded before the regional conflict. Reduced refining activity in China has further limited the volume of petroleum products entering global markets during a period of strong refining margins.

Diesel market tightens despite high refinery activity

U.S. refiners have processed large volumes of crude while domestic fuel inventories remain low. Federal energy data show crude inputs to U.S. refineries during the first seven months of 2026 reached their highest level since 2019. Refinery utilization has remained high as strong margins support processing rates. Even with that activity, distillate inventories entered August at their lowest level for this time of year in about three decades. Diesel and heating oil share the distillate inventory category tracked in weekly U.S. petroleum statistics.

Crude oil prices also advanced Wednesday, with Brent trading near $89.81 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate around $84.08. Diesel markets have shown stronger pressure because the available supply of finished fuel has tightened alongside refinery disruptions and export restrictions. Diesel remains a core fuel for trucking, agriculture, construction, manufacturing and other commercial activity. The combination of low U.S. inventories, record European refining margins and reduced international refinery output has kept refined-product markets tight across both sides of the Atlantic.
